Book Review: A Time to Rise

by Nadine Brandes

publisher’s synopsis

What more can you sacrifice than your life?

Parvin Blackwater is dead.

At least…that’s what the Council—and the world—thinks. But her sacrifice tore down part of the Wall long enough to stir up hope and rebellion in the people. Now she will rise again. Strong, free, and fearless.

Parvin and Solomon must uncover the mysterious clues that Jude left behind in order to destroy the projected Wall once and for all. Meanwhile, the Council schemes to new levels of technology in its attempts to keep the people contained. Can a one-handed Radical and a scarred ex-Enforcer really bring shalom to the world?

Parvin’s character arc and growth across the series is beautifully done. I also really appreciate how Nadine lets the relationship between Parvin and Solomon develop slowly and naturally (a lot of YA relationships happen unrealistically fast in my opinion). As with the other books, plot twists abound and will keep you wondering until the end.

Also, Skelley Chase is one of my favorite antagonists ever. Just saying. His character complexity is masterful.

If you’re looking for a series with strong themes that will keep you eagerly flipping pages, consider the Out of Time trilogy.

Cautions: two kisses; moderate romance; non-graphic moderate/heavy violence; brief, non-descriptive mentions of a side character having an abusive childhood
