Writers’ Conferences Part Three: What to Bring

Whether or not you travel often, there a few things you might not think of to pack for a writers’ conference in addition to your normal packing list. Here are some extra things I recommend bringing with!

*A notebook. Whether or not you’re a notetaker, bring a pen and paper. Trust me. You’ll likely end up needing it for something.

*Business cards. This is a super common way for writers to exchange information with each other and industry professionals. I designed mine in Canva and printed them through UPS. It has my headshot, name, contact information, social media handles, and tagline for what I write. Also, keep a few of them in your conference name badge pouch. That way you have them easily on hand!

*A folder. I always end up with loose papers during conferences, whether it’s a session handout, a business card, or free stickers. Having a folder in my backpack helps me keep everything organized.

*If you’re pitching, don’t forget your one-sheet and synopsis! Now, I haven’t pitched at a conference before—this year is my first time—so I don’t have much advice in this area. But make sure you do your research on the agents and editors you’re pitching to and bring everything that you’ll need for your appointments.

*Books! It’s so fun to meet authors and have them sign your books. Of course, don’t forget to leave room for new books and other fun merch that you’ll find in the vendor hall.

What else would you add to this packing list? Are you going to any writing conferences this summer?
