Thoughts on Reading Goals

I failed my 2024 Goodreads goal.

I knew it was coming. For the past four years, ever since I started tracking how many books I read each year, I passed one hundred books each year. I finished out this past year with sixty-four books. And that’s okay.

As we start this new year, I want to offer you a few thoughts from failing my Goodreads goal.

First off, it’s a goal, not a requirement. Don’t pressure yourself to meet it if it becomes unreasonable.

Second, everyone is in different seasons of life and has different time availability. I’ve never understood how some people exceed 300+ books in a year. I could maayyybe do that if I counted every children’s book I read with my students at work. I just don’t have the reading time those people have.

Third, your reading will vary from year to year. Do I wish I could still read as much as I did a couple years ago? Yeah, it’d be great! I’d make more of a dent in my TBR. 😉 But I have different priorities and responsibilities now, and that has naturally led to less reading. And that’s okay.

This year, I hoping to read sixty-five books. Right now, I think that’s an attainable goal for me. So as you see reading recaps and goals for 2025, remember that every reader is different. And enjoy your reading adventures.

  1. So true! Reading is a meant to be a pleasure and an edifying thing, not a pressure. Enjoy your reads for 2025!
