Write Every Day?

I’m not sure if there’s a piece of advice that writers seem to disagree on more than, “Write every day.” Some people live and thrive by it. For others, it kills their creativity and desire to write. It can feel like really divisive advice. But I think we need to step back for a second and think about the motivation behind the saying.

The only surefire way I have discovered to make sure I write is to simply sit down and do it. Eyes on the document, fingers on the keys. That’s how I get words written.

For me personally, I do better with a more frequent writing routine. I don’t write every day, but I keep a set schedule that has me writing whenever I can. Writing often keeps me in the writing mindset. The words flow faster and inspiration comes easier.

So when it comes to “write every day,” my advice with the saying is to study yourself as a writer. Know what helps you and what hinders you. Find out what keeps your creativity flowing. And write often. Because that’s what I think the idea between “write every day” is. You can’t get a book written without actually writing.

Do you have a writing schedule? What type of writing frequency works best for you?
