Writers’ Conferences Part Four: Personal Thoughts

This summer will be my sixth writers’ conference. So here are some thoughts and reflections I have on conferences. I hope that they encourage you, whether you’re a new or veteran attendee.

*It takes time to find your people. I knew literally no one at my first conference. I met two other girls but we didn’t stay in touch beyond the conference weekend. It wasn’t until my third conference that I knew people through writing groups and bookstagram that I met in person at the conference. Even now though, there are still times when I feel lost in a room full of people and like an outsider. But that’s okay.

*It’s okay not to pitch. This year is my first time pitching at a conference. There is no shame in politely responding with a “no” when asked if you’re pitching. You can still share what your book is about. And if the person you’re talking to is pitching, cheer them on!

*It won’t be perfect. That’s just a fact of life. Don’t put too many expectations and pressures on the conferences and yourself. Remember, God is sovereign over everything that happens at the conference, so what needs to happen will happen.

*It’s okay to have a different experience than everyone else. Before my first conference, I only heard people coming away from the conference on fire to write, loving the conference and the community. I didn’t immediately walk away like that. I sat on the airport shuttle still trying to take in everything, and wondering why I didn’t feel as enamored with the conference as all the other attendees seemed. But once I had time to process the conference, I realized I did have a good time and learned lots—that’s why I’ve kept going back! But don’t feel like your experience needs to match everyone else’s.

*Realm Makers Specific: You don’t have to dress up for the awards banquet. I love seeing everyone’s costumes and creativity, but I don’t have the imagination (or budget) to come up with costumes. It’s okay to have a simple costume or wear something formal. 😉

If you’ve been to a writers’ conference before and have more thoughts and encouragement, share them below! Will I see any of you at Realm Makers?
