I have over twenty-five short stories and flash fiction pieces published. Several of them are in print collections. I signed contracts for these stories. They were officially published.
Now, I’m not saying any of this to brag. But it wasn’t until I had several published stories under my belt until I felt comfortable calling myself an author, and a published one at that.
Friend, your published short works count. You are not an aspiring author.
Be proud of your short works! Writing, editing, and submitting them is still a huge accomplishment. I know we often focus only on what happens with our full-length novels, but the short works matter. Those milestones are important. They’re growing your portfolio and honing your writing skills, craft, and voice.
PS: I highly recommend submitting flash fiction to Havok Publishing! Their editorial team is fantastic, and it’s such a great experience.
