Conference Thoughts

With summer wrapping up, the season for writing conferences is coming to an end. But as I think over my time at Realm Makers, I have a few thoughts on conferences that I want to share.

1. It won’t be perfect. Every Realm Makers I’ve been to has had its personal ups and downs—imposter syndrome, loneliness, and discouragement can still find me as I’m surrounded by hundreds of Christian creatives. An appointment might not go like you hoped. But don’t let those thorns distract you from the roses.

2. It can take a while to find your people. My first conference, I knew no one. And I’m not good at meeting new people. Since then, I’ve gotten connected with people through writing programs and social media. But don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to someone random, even if you feel incredibly awkward. Chances are, the person you’re meeting feels the same way, and neither of you think the other awkward.

3. It’s okay to not pitch. Not pitching doesn’t make you less of a writer. I’ve been to Realm Makers five times and never pitched. My manuscript isn’t ready for it. So I just smile and say “no, not this year” when I’m asked. And if the person I’m talking to is pitching, I cheer them on.
